Carl Martinson (b. 1991) grew up on the not-quite-an-island of Ekerö, just outside Stockholm. In his twenties, he moved to Gothenburg to study furniture design at HDK-Valand. He has since returned to Stockholm, where he is pursuing a master’s degree in spatial design at Konstfack.
Martinson began working with intarsia two years ago and has since developed a distinctive style that blends naive figurative imagery with large, abstract landscapes. His intarsia works are often incorporated into furniture, transforming flat images into three-dimensional objects.
PINE TREES AND STILL LIFES
This exhibition presents works based on three distinct themes, all inspired by Martinson’s everyday observations. The images reflect his daily life in Björkhagen and the surrounding neighborhoods, where he frequently walks with his two children.
Upon returning to Stockholm, one of the first things that caught his attention was the abundance of tall pine trees in the urban environment. To him, these trees stood like Nordic palm trees or abstract sculptures, shaped by the sun and wind. In his works with urban motifs, Martinson draws inspiration from various locations and individual trees, capturing the stillness of an empty street.
All of the pieces are created using thin wood veneer, which Martinson meticulously cuts into shapes with fine knives and scissors. The images are then affixed to wooden boards, adding texture and depth to the scenes.
